Backwards Loop Cast-On

Handy for when you need to cast on stitches in the middle of a row – like button holes. I use it to cast on a new stitch after removing thumb stitches in my fingerless mitt patterns.

Two Images. Left Image: Yarn has been made into a loop with the yarn coming from the project under the working yarn tail. This loop has been placed on to the needle loosely. Right Image: The cast-on stitch has been pulled tight.
Form a loop with the yarn, then slip it on to the needle and tighten. Repeat, or continue knitting as directed.
